I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.
I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way they have to live than other things do.
I never saw a discontented tree. They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do.
I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.
I remember a hundred lovely lakes, and recall the fragrant breath of pine and fir and cedar and poplar trees. The trail has strung upon it, as upon a thread of silk, opalescent dawns and saffron sunsets.
